SPECIES DESCRIPTION
CARLINA BARNEBYANA

Family and Genus:- See- COMPOSITAE/Subgen. CARLINA

Common Names:- None

Homotypic Synonyms:- None

Meaning:- Carlina (L) For Charlemagne (742-814) Emperor of Rome (whose army
was supposed to have been cured of the plague with a species of Carlina, which the
Archangel had revealed to him).
                  Barnebyana (L) For Rupert Charles Barnaby (1911-2000) A British
botanist.

General description:- Perennial. Sparsely covered with long, shaggy hairs, or
almost hairless.

Stem:-
1) c. 8 cm, simple.

Leaves:-
1) Up to 9 x 2 cm, linear-oblanceolate pinnatisect, undulate, with a spinose margin.

Flowers:-
1) Capitula, 15-20 mm diam, solitary.
2) Outer involucral bracts, 6 mm.
3) Inner bracts, reddish-purple above and beneath, at least in the apical part
    (sometimes white towards the base).

Fruit:-
1) Achenes, c. 3 mm.
2) Pappus, c. 8 mm.

Key features:-
1) Inner involucral bracts, reddish-purple above, at least towards the apex
2) Not more than 10 cm.
3) Leaves, glabrescent.

Habitat:- Crevices of hard limestone cliffs, usually near the coast 0-150(-400) m.

Distribution:- Endemic to Crete and S. Karpathos. Locally common within it's
small distribution area.

Flowering time:- June-Sept.
