Meaning:- Artemisia (Gr) Dioscorides' name for Artemis (Diana), wife of Mausolus,
of Caria, Asia Minor.
                  Arborescens (L) Becoming or tending to be tree-like.

General description:- Densely tomentose, aromatic perennial.

Stem:-
1) 50-100 cm, woody below.

Leaves:-
1) 1- to 2-pinnatisect or the upper sometimes simple, petiolate.
2) Lobes, 5-25 x 1-2 mm, obtuse.

Flowers:-
1) Capitula, 6-7 mm across the inflorescence.
2) Involucre, 3·5-4 mm.
3) Bracts, ovate, tomentose, with a wide, glabrous, scarious margin.
4) Receptacle, hairy.
5) Corolla, glabrous.

Fruit:-
1) Achenes, obovoid, subterete or compressed, smooth, finely striate or 2-ribbed.
2) Pappus, absent or sometimes a small scarious ring.

Key features:-
1) Involucre, 3·5-4 mm.
2) Capitula, 6-7 mm across.

Habitat:- Dry open shrubby vegetation, grassy banks, often near villages (0-350) m.

Distribution:- Mediterranean region. Limited distribution on Crete mainly central
and in the west.
